The Brixton Distillery Company was founded in 2019 by two friends with a passion for rum. After years of working for one of the world’s largest drinks companies, Patrick Venning and Laurent Lacassagne wanted to create something meaningful and local, a brand with people at its heart.

The road to their first bottle of Market Row Botanical Rum was a little bumpy and included erecting a 2-tonne still in a first-floor distillery with a broken lift. Another notable bump was a plumbing mishap that meant the still was fed piping hot water instead of cold! However, despite all the challenges, the team (which by then included mater distiller Matt Servini and brand ambassador Mikey Hirsch) have never looked back.

The Brixton Distillery Company has been trading for over two years, survived a global pandemic, and Market Row Botanical Rum has won a silver IWSC award. Of course, this is not the end of our story, but we’re pretty chuffed with what we’ve achieved to date, all from our little distillery in the heart of Brixton.

We blend five exceptional rums from the finest distilleries in the Caribbean to make Market Row. Each rum brings a different element to the final blend, using a number of different techniques for fermentation, distillation and tropical ageing.

Inspired by our hometown, Market Row personifies everything we love about Brixton. Market Row is a botanical rum, handcrafted in the heart of Brixton, London and infused with flavours of the Market.

A blend of pot still rums from distilleries across Jamaica. Barbados and the Dominican Republic, Market Row is then re-distilled with hand-picked botanicals by our distiller, Matt Servini. It’s then hand bottled and hand labelled here in Brixton.

The botanicals in Market Row enhance the flavours that already exist within this wonderful blend of rums, while also giving it a subtle, yet unusual twist.

We’re passionate about supporting our local economy. Ever since our first bottle, we’ve sourced our botanicals from the local area, so when we say this is Brixton Bottled; we mean it.

Brixton and its unshakeable community have provided us with so much, we wouldn’t be here today without it. Collaborations have been the heart of this brand from the very beginning, what better way to launch ourselves into this community other than working with the very people who have built it. We have been privileged to work with an abundance of local Ambassadors that have accepted us with open arms, in true Brixton spirit.

Since launching Market Row, we’ve enjoyed a fantastic reception from local bars and restaurants. The first six months of trade were majorly disrupted by lockdowns and of course, whilst this felt like an uphill struggle, it gave us exactly what we needed; time to get to know our immediate locals, business owners and customers. We will be eternally grateful for the continuous support from our local bars and restaurants in Brixton.

The iconic Market Row Arcade, after which we named our rum, is managed by Brixton Village. This amazing company has supported and encouraged us from the get-go, providing countless opportunities to work with the plethora of traders in the market as well as supporting their varied event programme.

Our home is within Impact Brixton, a community-led co-working space full of many small businesses that share the same values of inclusivity and genuineness that we do. IB’s founder Gerald and his team have supported us consistently through our endeavours as a young business, advising us every step of the way whilst opening doors that have integrated and cemented us into the Brixton community.  The Impact family are our supporters, our colleagues, but most importantly friends of The Brixton Distillery.

It is the people of Brixton that provide community, it sure is hard to bottle, but we are never going to stop trying. From the start, we have aimed to celebrate the spirit and multiculturalism that exists in Brixton, over the next few years we aim to continue on this journey and if we can create 5 jobs in the next 5 years for local people from the Brixton area, I can retire happy!
